Green Red Sectional

Sectional vase with pulled handles was made at Calvin University in 2015 during the installation of The Coming at Art Prize in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is 19″ inches tall and weighs 14 lbs. and fired in reduction with Copper Mung glaze. I fired the 24 cu ft Alpine kiln that I last fired in 1973 at Calvin and put it into a heavy, fast reduction like it hadn’t seen in many years; I could see that the copper samples from the past 20 years were green instead of copper metallic conversion in reduction that produces the elusive blood red. The current class of ceramic students and 2 former student’s clay works received a marked transformation to the rich variations an oxidation starved atmosphere produces.
