Printed in 1994, this 12″ by 18″ etching was made almost made entirely by the aquatint method which involves dusting the entire plate with rosin, heating the powder to harden it, then using a grease crayon to stop out the action of the water based acid. The lightest areas in the print received the most crayon to resist the acid in graduated tones, so one has to work in reverse to achieve this rich effect. Ink is held in the bitten areas of the plate and then surface wiped carefully before placing damp paper on the plate and running it in the press under 10 tons of pressure. A similar plate (Platemark) can be seen printed on Jake’s instagram account @ vanwijkgraphics
